Manufacturing

POPLAR

It is called “Poplar “ to the assembly of vegetal species within the Populus gender, meaning 35 species.

In Spain the land poplars are: “temblón” (Populus tremula), “álamo” (Populus alba) and the poplar itself or black poplar (Populus nigra) and it can be also found some improved species.

Wooden crate manufacturing process consists mainly of poplar unrolling, to make both some crate components and poplar plywood for some other components, and finally components assembling.

The most useful part of the poplar log is profited for unrolling, but it can be also be used for sawing, and cellulose or chip board manufacturing.

Poplar is becoming more and more important in the world. European production means 5 million of cubic meter a year, and the spanish one has reached more than 600.000 cubic meter in the last 15 years for several times.

In Spain, the most outstanding poplar production region is Land of Castilla-León, mainly the Duero river basin, meaning more than 50% of spanish poplar crops surface. Lands of Andalucía and Castilla-La Mancha, and the Ebro river basin lands of La Rioja, Navarra, Aragón and Cataluña, are also important poplar growing areas.

Poplar is one of the most significant forestation species in river basins, for it helps to regulate and balance the river flows and improves landscape quality recovering huge forestry spaces. Moreover, is an economic and life quality sustain in the rural areas where it is grown as a planned forest.

The poplar standard age is between 10 and 15 years old. It is necessary a 25 to 50 cm diameter range to unroll a poplar log and get the maximum performance (from 60 to 70%) facing other kind of profits.

PLYWOOD

CRATES

ADVANTAGES

GROW means quality and recyclability}

GROW guarantees crate quality and recyclability. Its mark, world wide registered, identifies the crates that have been manufactured of grown wood, poplar plywood and magnetizable staples.

Only GROW guaranteed crates are marked with the GROW logo and a license number that identifies the manufacturer, allowing traceability.

GROW is ecology

Despite that wood is wrongly associated with de-forestation:

  • a wooden crate is made of grown wood (poplar and pine) in a process that only involves sawing, poplar unrolling and plywood, and stapling, thus only consuming renewable energy in its manufacturing process* unlike corrugated carton and plastic crates.
  • a wooden crate is easily recyclable and only-one-use, so it does not consume fossil energies*, and t consumes much less water*, unlike corrugated carton and plastic crates with a more demanding recycling and return/washing (plastic) processes.
  • a wooden crate life cycle emits less CO2, thus producing a, lesser greenhouse effect in 20 years*.

(*)according to anADEME (French National Agency for Energy and Environment) study backed by wood (SIEL/ GROW), corrugated carton (USFO) and plastic (CSEMP-CHEP) sectors in France.

GROW is one-way economy

GROW wooden crates are concerned about distribution; standard bases and recycling GROW assistance in Europe.

Your produce fit in the crate at good prices, no extra packaging management, no losses or guarantees as the ones involved in the use of pool systems.

GROW crates suppliers offer a “just in time” service, no extra stock or reusable packaging machinery space needs in the warehouses.

GROW is a natural choice as fresh produce packaging

Wood is your best personal card; its image matches with the quality and selection of the more natural produce.

It allows you a quality position facing customers and consumers; hygiene, trust, seduction and marketing.

It assures a longer trade life; preserves more your produce thanks to its better transpiration and a more open design for cooling , and to its anti-bacterian properties..

Wooden crates assure a longer shelf life for they are better cooled

The standard GROW wooden crate bottom design allows a better vertical fanning unlike corrugated carton crates or some plastic models. In fact, relative bottom hole surface is around 10%, thus not affecting crate strength even in very wet conditions.

So, 80% of fruit and vegetable packers interviewed by the Marketing Dept. of FEDEMCO/ GROW * remarked that the main advantage of wooden crates are, among others, its behaviour facing cooling, except from a 10% that only attributed that to the corrugated carton crates.

Beside, wooden crate is pre-cooled much more quickly than the corrugated carton one depending from the produce. I.e. strawberries packed in wooden crates pre-cooling (from 25 to 8ºC) time is a third that one of the corrugated carton crate.

(*) According to a personal survey developed in 2001 among 50 executives in the fruit and vegetable packing sector in Spain, meaning 2,5 million tons/year.

GROW means hygiene (HACCP)

European project GROW-HACCP (Hazardous Analysis and Critical Control Points) was born because of the 93/43/CEE Directive related to agri-food produce hygiene. Thus, GROW Companies give a total guarantee to its customers about HACCP norms, and therefore that their own HACCP control systems is fully assured concerning wooden packaging.

Wood assures a longer shelf life because of its anti-bacterian properties Doctors in Micro-biology Cliver, Ak and Kaspar from Winconsin-Madison University (U.S.A.) have studied wood behaviour versus plastic in kitchen cutting boards material by means of bacterial cross-contamination.

Opposite to foreseen results, bacterial pools on the wood boards tended to disappear while in the plastic ones they multiplied. As in wood, bacteria are absorbed and not return to surface, plastic does not absorb them at all thus growing in the surface quickly.

GROW means easy recycling

GROW wooden crates, once used, are pressed to make stocking and transport more profitable. Afterwards a single recycling process just involves grinding once eventual non-wood wastes (except from staples) have been removed. At the same time, loose staples or the few still fixed to the chips are separated by means of a electro-magnet.

So, recovery companies transform a waste material in a clean and profitable raw material for the recyclers.

Recyclers can, then, make an eventual second chip grinding to get a new raw material to manufacture other wood sub-products like: chip board, coal bricks, cattle beds, sawdust, organic soil, etc.

GROW promotes wood waste recovery and recycling in Europe.

GROW means recycling service

GROW promotes wooden crate waste recovery in the european commercial distribution, and its recycling and valorisation.

In fact, GROW in Spain trough this web page gives technical assistance to make easier the wooden wastes recovery and recycling in Spain, so as an up-dated information service with the most complete date base of wood waste recyclers of the country.(see more).

GROW assistance

Sometimes big retailers do not have enough information about how to cope with wooden crates waste in their areas.

Through personal interviews with logistic responsible in food distribution branch we aim to know better their problems and to offer our technical assistance to solve them

GROW has an expertise knowledge on wood recycling sector in Spain (see report) )

Thus, a complete Data Base of Wood Waste Recoverers and Recyclers in Spain is available in this web

Should you wish a more personal attention in Spain you can fill GROW assistance request just in this web page to send it on line or to print it and send it by fax.

Once request has been received we will be i.e. pleased to assist you depending from your preferences; giving you custom information ,just offering your waste to some recyclers from our data base, or attending personally where required
