Now, as the campaign comes to an end, figures show that lemon production has exceeded all initial forecasts by reaching 970,000 tons, 18% more than the previous campaign. Of the total production, 72% (700,000 tons) accounts for the Fino variety and 28% (270,000 tons) for the Verna variety.

There has been a 7% increase in exports (around 560,000 tons), quite a record for the sector. The European Union is still the main destination for Spanish lemon exports, receiving 90% of them. The largest growth in exports has been apparent in the United Kingdom (25%), France (16%), Italy (13%) and Germany (9%), which in total represent over 50% of exports within the EU.

Exports to third countries have also increased by 55%, notably the markets of Canada and Brazil.

Such good results for this campaign are partly due to a fall in production from Argentina (a fall of over 50%) and a reduction in the amount of citrus fruit exported from South Africa to the European Union due to the increase in phytosanitary controls.

Furthermore, Turkey (a main threat because of the difference in production costs) has targeted its production at the Near East, Russia and Ukraine.

In accordance with the Inter-professional Association of Lemons and Grapefruit (AILIMPO), prices during the campaign have been profitable for all parts of the chain, and especially for the farmer.

Also investments made to improve farming practices and optimize resources have resulted in higher yields and better quality fruit.
