FISH CONTAINERS. FEDEMCO demands equality of conditions

Despite a European legal framework, Spain tolerates the unregulated use of expanded polystyrene containers without drainage

FEDEMCO is in contact with different fisheries and public health administrations regarding their obligation to consumers to ensure compliance with health regulations and guarantee the wooden packaging industry equality of basic conditions so they can fairly carry out their business activities.

The European legal framework for fresh fish R (EC) 853/2004 does not specifically establish, permit or prohibit materials for the packaging of products, but rather for the general conditions of packaging, and ensuring that those conditions are met. It also establishes that “Containers in which fresh fishery products are kept under ice must be water-resistant and provide adequate drainage for melt water.”

The management of ice is a fundamental part of the quality and hygiene of fresh fish. This reference is important in the current context of the “fresh” fish market. And especially in Spain, where it is evident that single-use wooden containers are being substituted for expanded polystyrene containers without drainage in fishing boats or other steps of the fish handling process, and that, despite a European legal framework, Spain is tolerating and even encouraging unregulated use of illegal packaging.
