Spain exported 1 million tonnes of waste in 2016, 78% of this amount was paper and cardboard and 13% was plastic

On January 1, China implemented a ban on importing “foreign garbage”. The restriction mainly applies to plastic and paper waste, although other materials are also affected. The recycling industry in Europe has been hit hard by this new Chinese policy. The paper and plastic waste that China no longer buys is accumulating in European landfills.

According to data from the Spanish Federation of Recovery and Recycling, Spain exported 1 million tonnes in 2016, 78% of this amount was paper and cardboard and 13% was plastic. According to trade data from the Ministry of Economy, the Asian country has received approximately 35% of our used plastics since 2010.
