FEDEMCO-ECOLEÑO (supported by Ecoembalajes España, S.A.) has analysed for the thirteenth year running the recycling rate of wooden crates, packaging and pallets in Spain, so that the Ministry of the Environment can inform the European Commission of the results. The recycling rate for 2012 was 53%. Wood recycling amply met the minimum recycling target established for wood by the EU directive currently in force on crate waste (15%), and contributed to achieving the global recycling target for crates and packaging of all types of material (55%).

The rate for 2013 is currently being analysed. Hundreds of companies from the recycling sector are being interviewed, in addition to companies belonging to sectors that generate waste from wooden crates, packaging and pallets.

The study analyses the three phases of the life cycle of wooden crates and packaging.

During the manufacturing stage, the total volume is determined of the crates and packaging that are on the market, as well as their different destinations.

The market stage considers the use of crates or packaging by primary and secondary users, taking into account the possibility of them being reused or thrown away.

The recovery stage includes a study of how waste generated by wooden crates and packaging is collected by the corresponding agent (recoverer or recycler), who either repairs the packaging and pallets that can be reused or decides whether the waste is for recycling or energy valuation
